10k under 10

In my effort to do my base runs under 10 min mile pace, I picked up my pace for my ending uphills through Reed and on to Woodstock, 2 miles in all. I did faster than eights to make sure I averaged under ten. Turned out my math was off and I did 9.5, made me happy. I’m pretty pooped tonight, pasta dinner and I have nothing else to do other than lay in bed and watch basketball. I’m sure I’ll get some stretching in too though.

Rotating my new shoes is going really well so far. Both pairs feel really stable and I am getting a good mind-strike with them. They are starting to get a worn-in look. Hopefully they don’t look like resolution shoes anymore. I still have been having foot issues like pain and spasticity, but I guess overall it isn’t too bad. I’d love to find the miracle shoe, but I don’t think it is out there.

Oh today I actually wore shorts without tights for the first time in months. It was nice to get my legs out in the sunlight! I started taking vit D again, not for any other reason other than I should. I wonder how much good the 1000 mg(?) caplets I take actually do for me? I saw some massive dose wafers for sale, the 50000 mg(again I am not sure what they are) really expensive (I thought) at four wavers for $20.

I watched an interesting parkour movie called Beyond the Brink. Daniel Ibaca was really pretty amazing, but kind of a jerk too You can see a trailer here.

Yesterday at the track, today rest

Yesterday before procrastination set in . I wanted to wait for the sun to burn off clouds before I left but I I layered up and headed out into the cold fog On the way after a mile and a half the sun broke through. It quickly got warm and I tied my jacket around my waist. As I neared the track I saw a couple of runners doing their rounds, I filed in behind them. One of them was going really fast, though I did get to pass him on a straight. He returned the favor several times passing me effortlessly.

My workout felt good. I did 2 miles of straights & curves which worked out to 16 HR intervals for the sprints on the straights. I did them all strong up to the last lap (though I was fading at the end). My HR was pretty high for the intervals but I was able to get it down to 144ish on the way back. I ran the canyon hoping for no mud. There wasn’t much on the trails, pretty dry for the most part.

Oh, I almost forgot. I wore my other new pair of shoes for the run (Asics gel kayano 16), again breaking the golden rule of doing a short break-in run first. They were also 2E, which I have never done before. I always thought I might want to try a wide shoe thinking my feet might like the extra room (especially on the side I wear my lift). They were actually reasonably snug and I think I like the wider shoe so far.

I had lots of work today and it just made sense. Made it a rest day. My mileage is pretty high for the week already – 18 mi. I’ll do at least 14 more before Sunday is done.

Another long slow distance run today

Today I decided to go for another long(ish) run to start off my week. I wasn’t sure how I would feel as my food intake yesterday was highly suspect. I managed to put away my fair share of junk food during the super bowl. I didn’t drink anything so I didn’t have a hangover to deal with. It was good to sweat out some toxins! I am sure I put them there in my body.

I just got a new pair of Asics Gel-Kayanos. I got them used on ebay, they are an older model but in fine shape. So I broke the golden rule of new shoes (technically they aren’t new as they supposedly have 30 miles on them) and didn’t do a short run to break them in. They felt fine and my feet don’t feel sore at all, so I think I am good. My two pair that I have been running in both had over 650 miles on them and I decided it was time for a new set. I also picked up a pat of Kayano 16s as well. They are a 2e width which I hope won’t be a huge issue. My shoes always feel a bit snug, especially with the lift I wear in my right shoe, so I think the extra width will be ok. I’ll try those out next. Maybe I’ll take them out for a short run tomorrow which will work well with rehearsal (don’t like to exhaust myself on rehearsal day as my playing seems to suffer.) So far the 10s are good. They actually feel a bit loser than the newer models I have been wearing.

I am really feeling like I need to do some speed work to pick up my pace a bit. In the past I have noticed a significant difference with my pace after doing intervals at the track. I have been running so slowly this winter, much slower than in the past (though some of that I blame on not getting accurate measurements of distance, so I thought I was running faster). Still I have noticed other passing me up more often this winter. Some of that I can contribute to age but I also think some of it has to do with my conditioning. With the heart rate training I have been doing I do a lot more slow running trying to keep my HR under the 70% ceiling. I think I can boost my speed with some work. Maybe a track workout on Wednesday…

I am working on upping my weekly mileage and keeping my increase to 10% of my total. Last week was the second steady 10% increase This week I am shooting for 33 total miles and with 10.5 out of the way today I should be able to easily do that. The hardest part is going to be holding back so I don’t do too much. I have been doing my long runs on Monday which has worked out fine for the last two weeks, but I’d like to get back into the weekend schedule for my long runs. But that would put me way over my weekly total, so maybe I’ll hold out awhile longer and stick to the Monday long run schedule.

One note about today’s run. I did a pretty good job of keeping things at the recovery ceiling ending up with an average of 144 (perfect!). I want to incorporate recovery runs in as well that stay under 144, but I am really happy with that average for an LSD run.
