42+ miles this week

And I still have tomorrow, though I think I will take a rest day. This was the highest weekly mileage I have had in a long time. Unless I am willing to take the next step and train for a marathon, I probably need to cut myself off. 30-40 miles a week is plenty though I would like to lose some more weight still.

Lake of mystery solved!

My choice of a run through Milwaukie (yep, spelled right this time) or check out the lake of mystery. I initially decided on Milwaukie, but I didn’t get too far before I hit railroad tracks The road along the track had no shoulder to speak of, so I turned east. After running through a little block long nature preserve (which was really nice despite being part of a housing development) I decided to make my way back to King road and then the 30 blocks to the east that woudl lead me to the lake of mystery.

I thought the lake might have been part of a development, but I wasn’t expecting an upscale trailer park. I barely got to see the lake which was all fenced off with 5 foot chain link. I’m sure the birds like it, though I din’t see any. I ran around the perimeter of the park which was walled off to the north by a steep embankment. I hardly saw anyone out; several for sale signs almost like breadcrumbs. The one person I did see was driving an SUV she had just barreled out of the driveway in. As I passed her she blew out a nice big puff of smoke, nice. Ok, time to go back.

I knew I had some hills ahead of me but I didn’t want to take the one nearest to the l of m. So I decided to see if Springwater Corridor was blocked off on this end. When I had crossed it on 42nd, it was fenced off. So it was, but I could see several people out on it, so what the heck (cue: Breaking the Law by Judas Priest). The first fence was easy, but they really did a good job at 42nd and I had to do a little climbing. Past the bathrooms they had the Tideman Johnson Park blocked off as well. A little ways down the road the city revealed its plan to keep it open by fencing a corridor to it. So I headed up the entrance and made it back to east moreland.

Two more miles to go. I decided to stop and get a couple slices of pizza. Good recovery food. At a busy corner I waited, the walk sign flashed and a bike cut right in front of me making the turn on my left. His asleep sorry was answered by my “nice.” On the way down Woodstock I see mr. bike is also getting pizza, so I passed and headed home.

Finally back at home after 2 hrs and 10 mins. I get in the yard, pet the dog and my neighbor yells across the fence asking if I can give him a hand. A hand turns out to be getting his new boat motor out of his tahoe and mounted on the rolling rack he made, ugh. It was actually easier than it seemed, but I’d hate to do it every day.

With the motor in place I was ready to eat some casserole I had left over, lots of pasta and cheese!

So with the lake of mystery solved on my bachelor long run weekend, it opens up a whole new level of mystery. What is going on inside that crazy trailer park? Why do these people live there? What do they do? Whatever it is it is all done inside with the curtains drawn.

No run, lost my wallet

Today I lost my wallet after a meeting at a cafe. I figured it out in line at Trader Joes with an entire cart of groceries. I called Ruthann to bring her card. I checked my VM and noticed a message. It was from a woman who works at the Downtown Chapel (check them out!) She said a guest had turned it in and she would be at the front desk until five. And if I needed to pick it up later, they would be doing a soup kitchen until nine and I was welcome to stop by then.

So I announced the good news and Ruthann and I headed downtown. When I got to the chapel another woman was at the front, but Valerie had told her all about it. They actually didn’t have my wallet, I was handed a stack of cards, photos and plastic wallet divider. I was really glad to get back my driver’s licensee and some other ID. No credit cards, no cash, but that’s ok. Quick call canceled the cards. Someone had purchased Tri-met tickets, but I get that back, no biggie.

When I got home I found an email from the woman who found it saying she found me on Twitter and then found my website and then sent in a contact form from my site. Good sluething! I then decided to buy a new wallet to store my new stack of IDs. It was tough finding good non-leather wallets. I eventually bought from the Vegan Store.

About an hour later I got a phone call from the downtown police department. They had my actual wallet and a stack of business cards. Man I can’t give those away! Apparently a person who works emptying trash cans found it. Instead of just chucking it, he had turned it in to the police.

What struck me was how many people all did the right thing today and made an effort. It is funny how all of them had the same goal in their actions and I am psyched they were a success.

And if I don’t like my new wallet, I can always go back to my old one.

Time for water

No, not right now, well now too. I am speaking of the heat and the fact that I need to bring water with me once again. The mornings are cool enough when I start out, but by the time I finish up my run both me and the day have warmed up considerably. I have really started to slow down towards the end of the run. So I am pretty sure I would benefit from having that water, duh…

The best water strategy I have found in the past is to take small drinks along the way right from the start. This seems to keep me hydrated well enough. It is tough to resist taking the big drink at times and it is hard to get into the habit of the constant hydration, but it is worth it.

The other thing to get used to is carrying a water belt. I use a single 16oz (I think, though it might be 12) water bottle rather than the fancier small bottles which for me seem to be overkill and a hassle (though they do distribute the weight better. The single bottle belt I have fits in the base of my back and angles up to spread the weight a bit better. My belt also has a handy little pocket with enough room to carry some money and has just enough room to take my iphone with me as well though not really enough room to plug in the headphones without putting too much pressure on the jack (the cause of many of my electronic device’s failure over the years.) So at first it seems a bit uncomfortable to have the extra weight and even though it is more comfortable to wear it over my shirt my vanity kicks in and I favor a little belly pinching over the dorky over the shirt look. My old running shorts were great as they were long enough that I could pull them up high on my stomach (like an old fart) and wear the belt over the shorts. Then my short could drape over and hide any goofiness.

The run today was good despite the lack of water. I went pretty slowly: 9:30. I was a little tired from a somewhat restless rebif night’s sleep.

Neurologist visit and a long run

Today I had my one year Neurology appt. with Dr. Ellison. I like her a lot and feel like she is giving me good care, but I always feel hustled out. I always feel like I can talk to my doctors for longer and I know she has other patients. I did get a clean bill of health and she doesn’t want to see me again unless I see any new symptom for more than a couple of weeks. I think the ms is going as well as it can.

So I went in with the following questions:

  • What is going on with the lower abdomen soreness – she thinks it may be rebif related, but wante me to see my GP. I’m guessing rebif.
  • Foot numbness and ms hug on my feet – Dr. E said that’s a very common sideeffect and can happen in many places on the body like arms, chest torso
  • I mentioned Pot relieving numbness – She said that goes to show you the power of medical marijuana, but didn’t offer to write me a “green card”.
  • I asked about substitutes for Dialantin and she mentioned several but I only remember one – depicote – which for some reason I thought was an anti-depression drug
  • rebif payment options – She mentioned several of the ones I found and offered to have one of the staff look into programs.
  • Suppliments, DHEA, Creatine, ginko she glossed over all but approved of my vitamin regimen: multi-vit, vit c, vit d and calcium.

We didn’t get to talk about upcoming treatments which I wanted to do. But I have read about many of them. I think the next big drug will be the oral pill that is being tested.

It was a really nice sunny day today which made running even more of a priority. I went on the longer canyon run I have been doing for years and then mapped it Check it out. Being that this was the third in a row, I felt pretty pooped so I ran the 7+ miles slowly at a 9:38 mile pace.I was tired, but it was just too nice out to not run.
