Recent running

I have felt really erratic in my running lately. I looked back in my running logs and I have actually been really consistent in runs averaging about 20 miles a week, last week was the fourth in a row. Among the runs I have done in that time I got some quality runs in, just few and far between. But all in all dispersed equally throughout the entire four weeks. So not so erratic after all.

Today I went on my typical run of late; 6.5 miles through East Moreland and reed campus. It rained lightly through most of it, but it was refreshing. My HR was high at times, but not for long periods of time. I have been adding the reed track through the soccer fields. I just realized I don’t know how far it is, I’ll have to measure next time I run it. I am sure my watch reports would tell me, but I am too lazy to look.

Nine miles

While not overly long in the cannon of my running career, the nine miles I did on Monday seemed pretty epic. I haven’t run that far in several months. Running has been one of those things that comes slowly lately with the cold weather and lack of sunlight, but with the equinox right around the corner, perhaps that will quickly change. My mileage is way down, but I am beginning to feel a bit stronger and my runs are getting a bit faster. I am at least pushing it a bit as of late as well. I have done a couple of quality runs in the past couple weeks that felt really good. I haven’t been following the recovery run recipe though, I need to get back on that track again. Still the junk runs have felt good and I am looking forward to building up my miles again, so the break appears to have done its job.

My aches and pains have seemed to abated a bit. The tightness in my glutes is still there, but not nearly as intense as it was and certainly not as painful. My feet feel pretty good. I was a little worried about that as I had walked home from a party (about three miles) in not the best of shoes and they were hurting the next day. But a run later that day showed no further complications (granted it was less than three miles…)

Good short week of running

I say short cause I only got three runs in. But being that it followed a rest week, er healing week. My ankle feels fine, no pain at all. Still I have been taking it easy on it.

I should have run today. but I hate the wind and it was windy today. Yesterday I did my first quality run in 3-4 weeks; a straights and curves work out at the track. I only did 6 laps, but that will give me room for improvement! So back to today, it was a good one to rest. Still I wish I had run.

I have been doing my little stair stepper machine. I got to figure out what I need to oil as the pistons got really hot. I oiled it afterward, but I am not sure if I am oiling the right areas. I think I’ll try it tonight and see how hot it gets.

So back to why I thought the week was a success. All of the runs were at a pretty easy pace. Even the S&Cs, I did both my warm up and cool down at a slow pace, the cool down at a snail-like 12 min mile, granted that it is all up-hill from the track. My previous two runs where also real slow in general and felt pretty easy.

My last four runs have all been in cold weather. Cold, but dry. My lungs dealt with the temperature pretty well, I haven’t been coughing at all. My beard has been keeping me warm!

Slippery roads and waning light

With all the leaves and rain we have been having the roads have gotten rather hazardous. I have managed to keep upright so far, but I am acutely aware that my traction is not what it was on those dry warm summer morning. I have also managed to keep my feet dry by not stepping into any puddles hidden beneath a layer of leaves. Portlanders are up in arms about having to pay to have their leaves hauled away by the city. The cry of “Why can’t I just rake them into the road?” rings out as they use leaf blowers to remove the offending leaves from their yards by moving them to the street. It is apparently going to cost taxpayers a whopping $30 apiece to pay for the city service of removing the leaves. They bellow “We never had to pay before!” Yeah, you didn’t before you refused to vote for the taxes it took to cover city improvements. Dumb asses. And yet the practice of blowing (and sometimes manually raking) leaves into the streets continues. Makes my running troublesome, but do I cry and moan? No, I just run through them.

In addition to the wet leaves causing me grief I now have to deal with daylight savings time. Growing up in Arizona had its advantages one of which was no DST. I can'[t believe they got that right! So now my evenings get dark an hour earlier and I have more time to get up early. Gee thanks.

Recovery/junk run

It felt really good to look at the third day in a row back running after my nine days off of back rest. I wanted to do a long recovery run and that is basically what I managed to do. I did have several instances where I pushed it up a hill or just picked up the pace and therefore my heart rate pushed past my recovery ceiling of 144. So I need to call it a junk run. But that is ok, it felt pretty good.

My Garmin watch stopped recording at six miles into my run. Granted it was raining steady at times, the gps failed and wouldn’t hook back up. Oddly the timer still continued so at least I knew how long I was out. But no other data. Those are the numbers I wanted to look at. Gotta feed my stats addiction! I am not that happy with how the Garmin for runner

Overall I would call it a good run and after three running days in a row, a Friday of rest is in order.

Crystal Springs restoration

While most of my posts are about running and ms, I also like to talk about the places I run. The canyon on the reed campus is one of my favorites and the spring that runs through it has had a restoration project going on this year. I thought I would post this video about the project and the canyon.

White runner

“Its a local my Lord, in a flat bed Ford. Slowin’ down to take a look at me.”

Here in Northern AZ I am somewhat of an oddity. Most of the runners in this part of the country are Native Americans, in Winslow many of them are Hopi or Navajo. The high school cross country teams are pretty solid indications of this racial makeup. I imagine the running portions of the local track team are as well. The only other runner I saw on this trip was a Native American woman, though I hear stories of white woman who lives here who runs marathons. Still I seem to get a number of stares from cars driving by and people on the street and I know they aren’t basking in my good looks.

Today I ran out to the Little Colorado river that was running as fast as I have ever seen it. It was milk chocolate brown and swollen from the monsoon rains. The bridge over the river was a bout 3.25 miles from the house and I continued on to Indian tourist shop where I turned around hoping for an eight mile run in total. Several trains roared by and kept me company. On the way back on old highway 66 I stopped by the 911 memorial that contains several girders from the event. Someone had graphitied a rock saying “USA kicks ass.” Only in Winslow. Actually and sadly, probably in many areas of the country…

Long run of the week

This week’s long run wasn’t actually that long, but it was longer than it could have been. A friend of mine invited me to go running with him and a friend of his. Both of them aren’t regular runners, so I knew it would be very casual. To top it off he wanted to run Mt Tabor which is by no means a casual run. So not only would it be casual, but would feature a lot of stopping which was fine.

So knowing all this I decided to get some miles in ahead of time. I have been contemplating adding Laurelhurst park into my regular core of runs. I discovered it was 3.25 miles from my house to the park and about a mile around it. So all in all 7.5 miles in total from home to park and back. I didn’t head back home, rather ran over to the volcano to meet my friends. I was running a bit late so I had to put on the afterburners to make it up the hill in time. After meeting them we headed up the volcano. It was fun and nice to have some company as my running partner has been out of town all week. All in all I got in 10.5 miles, not enough to put me over the 40 miles total for the week. I hope to get out today for a good start to the week.

Two quality runs sandwich a rest day

Today I ran my East Moreland Tempo run again, I thought I did my fastest first and second miles, but they turned out to be both sub 8 min miles which was a bit slower than the week I did 7:18 and 8:27. My third miles in both runs was really close, only a few seconds off at 9:10. I had to push that second mile for almost the entire run and I was tired. I slowed down for the entire third mile and kept it  pretty consistent at that pace.

I have been living on running candy on these quality run. This one I only had  four sport beans and no water until the third mile. No gels either, but a Lara bar beforehand. I swear those Sport Beans are addictive.

So this was the second quality run in a row with a non-running day in between. I did do lots of gardening that day, so a lot of up an down and crouching. So I was not feeling 100% for the tempo run which I think why I had to push myself harder to get the first two faster miles. I’m glad I did  though as I was close to just doing a junk run. Overall I feel good after both, I think I can see a recovery run in my near future.

Rainy week

This week, actually this whole month, has been super rainy. While I don’t mind running in a little rain, downpours are too much! My mileage has been suffering, until yesterday that is. Saturday I got an early start on what ended up being the furthest I have run this year, 15.5 miles. Overall it felt pretty good though slow. I started by heading up to the top of Mt. Tabor, our friendly inactive volcano. After enjoying the run down and out of the park I headed in a southwest direction and entered Oaks Bottom wildlife refuge which eventually hooked up to the Springwater Corridor. I ran that for a mile or so and then curved around through the park and into Sellwood and West Moreland. Over the bridge I ended my run by going through East Moreland and up to Woodstock for that pizza I missed out on a couple of weeks back. I was pretty pooped and feeling a bit sore, especially in my hip. I need to break out the foam roller tonight for a little hip work!

I ended up with over 30 miles this week, but most of them came on Saturday. I am looking forward to being a bit more consistent this week. I got two quality runs in last week, so that was good, just too many days with no running. Next week will be better.

Mom asked me why I do this to myself. An extremely reasonable question! Part of it is the health benefit of the preparation for doing long endurance runs. Part of it is the burning of 2500+ calories. Part of it is the challenge of seeing just how far I can will myself to run. My distances are by no means incredibly long, but they are good distances and my body certainly feels it after I am done. I don’t feel like I am running away from the ms, always keeping ahead of it. No, it is more of an overall health benefit that I think is doing the most good for me. It has been over two years since any major symptoms so I am thinking it must be working. I have no illusions about curing my ms, but I do think I am helping to keep it at bay. I makes me wonder what effect running would have on me if I wasn’t taking the rebif. Would I be in a similar place? Could extreme exercise and diet work to prevent ms on their own?
